| Thoughts from the trip back to Taiwan in 2008. |

It has been almost five years since last time I was in Taiwan. The purpose of this trip was mainly to see my family and to reconnect with some old friends in interactive field.
It was a nice trip with a little bad weather, raining for the two weeks we were there. I couldn’t complain. I love my family and I was eager to see my old friends. The rain was not that big of a deal. I shall skip the part with my family.
Anyway, One thing struck me was actually the fact that friend of mine has been picking up projects from China for months. Mainly from an ad agency that has a branch in Shanghai. They bring the production work back to Taiwan for cheaper labor and reliable relationship. I didn’t know that the labor in Taipei is cheaper than the labor in Shanghai in our industry. I was shocked and worried.
The small market size is to blame for what happened but I feel sad because I know people in Taiwan could have done something different if we reach out internationally 5 years earlier. The basic issue lays in our industry in Taiwan is people don’t think they have the ability to manage clients outside of the island.
When I was with DMC five years ago, there was a chance to bring in a client from Canada, which is a telecoms company, Telus. We had a tracking solution based on the cell phone tower just like the GPS-like function in the iPhone. I sold in the idea and show a prototype to the client. By the end, DMC could not pick up the challenge. Instead I have to let go the opportunity and end up leaving DMC.
What is the solution? We need more people who speak both Mandarin and English in this profession. Taiwan should bring in more professional foreigner workers instead only low labor workers. The government can subsidize the company that brings these professionals in the country. Taiwan has only of the best internet infrastructure and we can only benefit from it. Bring in more good business development professionals. Establish production network around the world. There are tons of stuff we can do to improve.
What’s your thoughts?
